Obituary of Betty D. Griswold

Mrs. Betty Davis Griswold of Camden died Thursday, November 23, 2017. Born in Central, she was the daughter of George Wiley Davis and Hester “Hettie” Trapp Davis. As a teenager, she was an avid basketball player and graduated from Ashwood High School. In 1980, she married Herbert Lee Griswold and they enjoyed 33 years together. After retirement from DuPont, they had the pleasure of traveling often to the beach and mountains. She was active in the Seniors Group at Wateree Baptist Church where she was a member. She loved her Sunday school class and taking shopping trips with her sister Joline. She enjoyed decorating, sewing, knitting, and crocheting. Mrs. Griswold was very involved in the lives of her two granddaughters. She spent much of her time caring for them and attending school functions. Her granddaughters credit her for instilling determination, confidence, morals, manners, and love in their lives. They hold her in the highest regard for the generous time she spent with them. Mrs. Griswold loved home and family, hence her life was spent amid the surroundings that were dear to her heart. For the past seven years, her daughter has lovingly cared for her. She has ensured that nothing was lacking for her comfort. Mrs. Griswold leaves us after a season of quiet rest. Her family would like to thank all of the friends and care takers who have spent time caring for her and them. Her love was left to her granddaughters through many letters and videos. She made it a special point to record many of her family’s celebrations and everyday life. Betty leaves behind a legacy that will endure for generations. Mrs. Griswold is survived by her two children, Kathy Jones Barnes and David Jones, Jr. (Fredia), two granddaughters Channing Barnes Childers (Trey) and Britton Barnes Swingle (Gary), one great-grandson Guy Barnes Swingle, and a sister Joline Davis McIlwain. She was predeceased by her husband, Herbert Lee Griswold, sisters Vida Ree Davis Boykin and Sarah Leview Davis, and her parents. Funeral services will be held on Monday, Nov 27, 2017 at 4:00 p.m. at Wateree Baptist Church in Camden with burial to follow. The family will greet friends at the church on Monday from 3:00-4:00 p.m. prior to the service. Powers Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
