Obituary of Richard S. Morris
ELGIN – Richard Stephen Morris, 81, passed away at his home on Thursday, September 20, 2012, from non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma. A memorial service will be held on Friday, October 12, 2012, at 2:00 p.m. at St. John Neumann Catholic Church on Polo Road. He was born in Toledo, Ohio on May 12, 1931. He was predeceased by his parents, Stephen and Irene Mroziewicz (Kwiatkowski), Polish immigrants. He was also predeceased by his brother Alfred Mroziewicz. Richard is survived by his wife of 38 ½ years, Rita Annette Morris (Leary), his loving and devoted caregiver during his last six months, his son Philippe Stephen Joseph Morris, his granddaughter, Tiffany Marie Morris, his great granddaughter, Desiree Marie Hall, and his nephew Bill Mroziewicz.
He graduated in 1954 from the University of Toledo with a BBA and later received his MBA from Syracuse University. He served in the US Army and was stationed in Denver, CO, with the Army Audit Agency. He was transferred to Casablanca, Morocco, eventually changing from Army to civilian status. He lived and worked in several European countries over a period of 17 years. He retired in 1980 from the Defense department in the Pentagon where he was an Assistant Comptroller of the Army. After his retirement, he began a second career at the Catholic University of America in Washington, DC, as an assistant professor in the finance department, retiring in 1993.
Richard was a practicing Catholic with the strength of his convictions and a member of the Knights of Columbus.
He was known as a doer, one never to procrastinate. He persevered through difficulties with a strong will and determination, the strength of his character. He was a hard worker with a sense of duty accompanied by a good nature, and a good sense of humor. The “salt of the earth” some would say, trusted, admired, and loved by many. In addition to being a well-seasoned traveler, he was an avid tennis player and loved to ski.
The family appreciates the care of Hospice of Tri-County and in particular, the love and care of Sherry Simpson, RN, who saw to Richard’s many needs over a six month period. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests for your consideration the Little Sisters of the Poor, Jeanne Jugan Residence, 4200 Harewood Road, NE, Washington, DC 20017, or Hospice Care of Tri-County, 2039 West DeKalb Street, Camden, SC 29020.
