Obituary of E. L. Griggs
CAMDEN – Burial with military honors for Ernest Lee Griggs, III, 83, will be held on Friday at Fort Jackson National Cemetery at 12pm. Following the burial, a memorial service will be held at 1:30pm at Bethesda Presbyterian Church. The family will receive friends following the service at the church. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the K.C. Marine Corps League or Thiel Meyer Animal Shelter.
Mr. Griggs passed away August 5, 2017. Born on September 26, 1933, in Waynesboro, VA, he was the son of the late Colonel E. L. Griggs, Jr. and Lila D. Griggs. He grew up in the Shenandoah Valley and attended the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga. Griggs made his home in Camden, S.C., arriving there in 1974 after living in Atlanta, GA and Chattanooga, TN.
He served in the USNR, USMC and USMCR from 1950 through 1959. He received an honorable discharge and was award the UN Service Medal, Korean Service Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Good Conduct Medal, Expert Rifle and Pistol Medals. He was a life member of the US Marine Corps League and member of the Kershaw County Leathernecks.
Griggs was a life member and past President of the South Carolina Locksmith Association, where he was named to the Hall of Fame. He was also a member of the Alpha Iota Chapter of Sigma Fraternity, Sons of Confederate Veterans, and Military Order Stars and Bars. He was an amateur radio operator K4ELG, member of Bethesda Presbyterian Church, former Red Cross Disaster Services volunteer, owner/manager of Seekers Process Service and Protection Technology, was a freelance writer and photographer, and was published in numerous national magazines. Griggs was former locksmith and security specialist, security consultant, author of books on tool and mark identification and forensic locksmithing, a forensic locksmith, and was self-employed since 1960. He owned AA Protech Lock and Safe in Camden, SC for a number of years.
He is survived by his wife, Kimberly Jean Griggs; sons, Robert Lee Griggs and Michael Dews Griggs; 3 grandchildren; sister, Leigh Lown.
