Obituary of James Allen Damon
ELGIN - Funeral Mass for James Allen “Pop” Damon, 81, will be celebrated on Friday at 1:00 p.m. at Transfiguration Catholic Church, Blythewood. Final Commendation and Farewell Prayers will be in Memorial Gardens of Columbia. The United States Army will render honors. The family will receive friends Thursday 6-8 p.m. at Powers Funeral Home, Lugoff. Memorials may be made to Palmetto Health Hospice.
Jim died Monday, September 1, 2008, after a brief illness. Born December 11, 1926 in Fort Wayne, Indiana, he was a son of the late Donald and Helen Damon. He was preceded in death, by his wife, Hildegard, and sisters, Sharon and Judy. Jim graduated from Kokomo High, Kokomo, Indiana, in 1944 and joined the United States Air Force where he served for 4 years. He later joined the United States Army in 1949 and served in the Korean War, where he was cited for saving the lives of several of his fellow soldiers by keeping their position from being overrun. Jim retired from the Army in 1967. After his military retirement Jim was involved in the public and private sector.
Jim is survived by his brother, Michael Damon of Phoenix, Ariz.; loving companions and care givers, Betty and Steve Brogdon of Elgin; children, Stephen Damon of Boston, Mass, Timothy Damon of Baton Rouge, La., Diane Blowers of Columbia, Barbara Mitchell of Saint Petersburg, Fla., Veronica Pace of Lexington and Janet Blume of Elgin,; 10 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; 1 great great-granddaughter; and many nieces and nephews.
