Preacher Pete was a wonderful man and a good friend. He married my husband and me many years ago. I was his secretary at Socastee Baptist for 11 years, but worked with him with the children's group for many years before. We were fortunate that our children were able to know and love him. Our son Chuck called him "Preacher Bubblegum" and our daughter, Amanda loved to tease him in the office, which he fondly responded with giving her dead frogs and spiders. When he retired from here, I heard some of the kids say they felt sorry for the kids just coming up because they would never get to know him, and that they learned to pray out loud in church because he gave them the opportunity to do so. He used to have a child sit next to him in the pulpit before he preached - what a treat for them. On day a little girl cried out that she had not had a hug from him yet, went up to the pulpit, gave him a big hug, which he responded by giving her a squeeze, all the while speaking his message. It never bothered him. He loved children. They are so many fond and loving memories of him. He will be greatly missed. Our love to the family and to Miss Bobbie.
