CAMDEN – Funeral service for David Peter Peebles, Jr., 75, will be held on Sunday at 3:00 p.m. at First Baptist Church of Camden with burial to follow in Quaker Cemetery. The Rev. Bruce Hancock will officiate. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service in the church fellowship hall. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society or the First Baptist Church of Camden. Mr. Peebles passed away on Friday Morning, January 27, 2017, surrounded by his family. Born in Camden, he was the son of the late David Peter Peebles Sr. and Myrtle Althea Beckham Peebles Hastings. He retired as general manager with South Gate Bowling Center. He was inducted into the Bowling Hall of Fame. He was a former member of the Lion’s Club. David was an advocate for youth bowling at Southgate Bowling Center. He gave out scholarships to the graduating seniors that bowled at Southgate, even though the local association gave out scholarships, as well. He would have the bowling center cover a portion of the entry fees for each bowler for the tournaments they participated in, to take some of the burden off the parents. At the end of every season he had a pizza party for the league to pass out awards. He would allow the Timothy Spencer Rice Scratch Tournament bowlers to practice free of charge the morning of the tournament. He was also instrumental in getting the trophies ordered and setting up the awards banquet for the Annual Youth Association Tournament. Finally, David was an advocate for the Pee Dee Youth Bowling Association when the men’s, women’s & youth associations decided to merge as part of the United States Bowling Congress, he made sure the youth would not be forgotten. With David’s contributions, the Saturday Morning Youth League at Southgate Bowling Center was one of the best in the State. He bowled a perfect game on three separate occasions, 9/13/2011, 11/3/2002, and 1/16/2003. He was Inducted into the Pee Dee USBC Association Hall of Fame in 2012 and was a Devon McKnight trophy winner Surviving are his wife of 55 years, Zulee Tidwell Peebles; daughter, Candace Kardack of Camden; son, Stephen Van Peebles of Camden; brother, Larry Peebles (Elaine) of Lugoff; sister, Linda Lindsey (Ronnie) of Lexington, Judith Wagener of Camden, Deborah Newman (Mike) of Cassatt, and Kathy Hall of Camden; grandchildren, Forrest Kardack (Payton) of Camden, Brooke Kardack Tidwell (Jeremy) of Camden, Leila Peebles of Florence, and Price Peebles of Bethune; and great-grandchild, Scottlynn Tidwell of Camden. He was predeceased by brother, Lee Peebles; and step-brother, Johnnie Peebles.
