Mrs. Heckle, wife of the late Newman L. Heckle, died on August 10, 2016. Born in Bethune, she was the daughter of the late John Grier Squires and Eva Mae Newman Squires. She was a member of Timrod Baptist Church. Before her declining health, she was active in Sunday School, Goldenrods, and WMU. She also volunteered her time reading to the students at Bethune Elementary School. She enjoyed traveling and was very proud that she had visited every state in the continental United States. She was a homemaker, which was a demanding job. She spent her time canning vegetables, making clothes for her two daughters and grandchildren, helping with homework, school projects, and running errands for family. She loved to take care of others, loved the Lord Jesus Christ and read her Bible daily.
Surviving are her two daughters, Wanda (Paul) Davis and Myra (Marvin Lee) Brown all of Bethune; brother, John E. (Gloria) Squires of Camden; brother-in-law, Charles O. Middleton of Jefferson; 2 grandchildren, David G. Baker and April (Ashley) Mangum; and 2 great-grandchildren, Hunter Baker and Newman Mangum. She is also survived by step-grandchildren, Eddie (Lisa) Davis, Jason (Amanda) Brown; and 2 step great-grandchildren, Matthew Davis and Henry Brown. She was predeceased by a sister, Esther S. Middleton.
The family expresses their sincere appreciation to the staff of Pinedale Assisted Living and to KershawHealth Hospice for their love, kindness, and outstanding care given to our mother for the past several years. The family also thanks Powers Funeral Home for their assistance in this difficult time in our life.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that memorials may be made to Gideons International, P.O. Box 1333, Camden, SC 29021 or Connie Maxwell Children’s Home, 212 Zora Rd, Chesterfield, SC 29709.
