Obituary of Joseph Workman

With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of Joseph Workman, who passed away on Wednesday, August 26, 2026. He was a beacon of love, compassion, and thoughtfulness that brightened the lives of all who had the privilege to know him. Born on December 23, 1942, he was a master mechanic by profession, a testament to his love for perfecting things, and a stylish gentleman which was reflected in his starched jeans, brim hats, and collared shirts. His love for music, card games, and pool was only matched by his passion for gardening and yard work. Above all else Joseph carried a deep love and enjoyment for his family and cherished every moment and memory he shared with them. 

He was a firm but fair man, radiating affection and warmth to those he cherished. Joseph was an alumnus of Mather Academy, where he received numerous certificates, further accentuating his professional passion. 

Surviving Joseph is his wife, Susan Gathers Workman; children, Ryan Workman (Courtney), Joseph B. Workman, Anthony Workman, Lisa Workman, Eric Martin (Leon), Samantha Owens (Daniel) and Mary Workman (Samuel); brother, Allen Miller; 10 grandchildren, 7 great grandchildren; sisters-in-law, Elsie Grace and Caroline Salmond (George); brothers-in-law, Jerome Gathers and Johnny Gathers (Kimberly); best friend, James Chestnut; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and extended family. 

 He is preceded in death by his father, Wesley Carter, and his mother, Mary Hall; brother, Henry, Workman;and 1 grandchild. 

A public viewing will be held on Monday, August 31, 2026 from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm at New Life Christian Outreach Church in Lugoff, SC. A funeral service will be held the following day at the church at 11:00 am with a burial to follow in Cedar Cemetery in Camden, SC.
