John Thomas Arledge, a pillar of strength and wisdom, passed away peacefully on July 2, 2026 at his home. Born on May 13, 1934, in Kershaw County, SC, John lived a life of dedicated service, love, and commitment. As the late Robert Kennedy once said, "The purpose of life is to contribute in some way to making things better." John indeed made things better, not only for his beloved City of Camden but for all those fortunate enough to have known him.

John's life was a testament to his commitment to public service, beginning with his military service in the United States Army from May 1956 to May 1958. His law enforcement career started with the Kershaw County Rural Police in the Buffalo Community and culminated with his service as the Police Chief for the City of Camden, a role he assumed in 1982. A trailblazer in his field, he was the first Chief to hire a female officer, paving the way for diversity in the department. His dedication extended beyond his primary occupation, as he also worked various jobs, from insurance agent to roofing contractor. He was a 1977 graduate of the FBI National Academy in Quantico, VA, and held an Associate's Degree in Criminal Justice. 

John's work ethic was only surpassed by his love for his family and his hobbies. Married to his beloved wife, Janice Denton Arledge, since August 1, 1969, John was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather. His family was his haven, and he found joy in providing them with strength and sound advice. In his leisure time, John could often be found fishing or tending to his cherished garden. 

He is survived by his wife, Janice D. Arledge; sons, Kevin Arledge (Vondell) of Anderson, Bruce Arledge (Erin) of Dalton, GA, and Brian Arledge (Maryann) of Camden; sister, Sybol  Brown; sister-in-law, Helen Arledge; brothers-in-law, Buck Watson, Henry Smith and Albert Rose; 14 grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, John S. "Jack" and Minnie Wilson Arledge; sons, Jay Corbett and David Arledge; sisters, Almeda Gainey, Elizabeth Smith, Frances Truesdale, Alberta O'Neal, Nancy Brown and Patsy Watson; brothers, Willis Arledge and Joseph Arledge;' and grandson, Andrew Arledge.

A service to celebrate Chief Arledge's life will be held on Sunday, July 5, 2026 at 3:00 p.m. at Malvern Hill Baptist Church with burial to follow in the church cemetery.  The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the church.
