In honor of Betty’s love for colorful flowers and joyful living, family and friends are encouraged to wear bright and colorful clothing to celebrate her life.
Born in Memphis, TN on November 9, 1933, to George Gillian and Clara Jane Wynsett Taylor, Betty lived a life filled with passion for education, music, and her loved ones.
Betty graduated from Union University in Jackson, TN, earning a Bachelor’s degree in Education with a minor in German. As her husband’s career led the family to various places, Betty taught school in Fayetteville, AK; Lyons, GA; and ultimately Camden, SC, where she spent a decade teaching at Pine Tree Hill Elementary School before retiring. Her commitment to education reflected her belief in the power of knowledge to shape lives and inspire future generations.
Betty was a devoted member of Columbia First Baptist Church and previously an active member of Camden First Baptist Church. Music was one of her greatest joys, and she faithfully sang in the adult choirs and ensembles. She also served as a chaperone for youth trips at Camden FBC, investing in the lives of young people and fostering lifelong connections within her church family.
Betty’s many talents and interests enriched the lives of those around her. She enjoyed flower arranging, playing bridge with friends, watching golf on television, and enthusiastically cheering for the Clemson Tigers. Her dedication to music and the arts extended into the community through her years of involvement with the CamBand organization supporting the Camden High School Band, as well as her support of the Camden Community Theater.
She is survived by her children: Alan Brown (Sharon) of Warsaw, KY; Bob Brown (Jayne) of Oakland, TN; Susie Brown Gerrald (Phillip) of Hickory, NC; and Scott Brown (Sharon) of Camden, SC. She also leaves behind her cherished grandchildren: Joshua Brown of Crescent Springs, KY; Jeremiah Brown (Hannah) of Shelbyville, KY; Will Gerrald (Caitlin) of Hickory, NC; Travis Gerrald (Keely) of Charlotte, NC; Nicholas Gerrald (Jessa) of West Jefferson, NC; Blake Brown of Fort Mill, SC; and Mary Scott Brown of Mount Pleasant, SC. Betty was also blessed with eight beloved great-grandchildren: Henry, Theodore, Patrick, Bo, Wyatt, Jane, Elsie Mae, and Noah. She is also survived by her siblings: Jane Anne Crawley of Owens Cross Roads, AL; John Taylor of Humboldt, TN; and Rev. Walter Taylor (Judy) of Jackson, TN.
She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Dr. William G. Brown, Jr.; her parents, George and Clara Taylor; and her brothers, George Taylor, Jr. and Don Taylor.
Betty’s family would like to express their heartfelt gratitude to the many loving caregivers on the Cornwallis wing at Karesh at Beechwood for the compassion, kindness, and devoted care they provided to Betty. The family would also like to extend their sincere appreciation to Dr. Jeff Hook for the many years of compassionate and personal care he provided to both Betty and Bill throughout the years.
