George Larry Langdale Obituary

George Larry Langdale, lovingly called “Papa” by his family, was born on February 6, 1947 in Walterboro, SC. A dedicated husband, father, and grandfather, George passed away on May 23, 2026 in Columbia, SC at the age of 79.

George’s occupational interests were diverse and wide-ranging.  He was a distinguished veteran of the Vietnam War, having honorably served as a member of the 101st Military Intelligence Company, a specialized branch of the Army Security Agency (ASA).  After leaving the military, he hitchhiked across the United States, working at ranches in Kansas and Oklahoma.  Later, he became a construction foreman, the owner of a residential tree service, a high school physics and trigonometry teacher, and a cattle farmer in Fairfield County, South Carolina.  He often joked that  "I used to be a cowboy, and now I'm a cattleman."

He was a state pole vaulting champion while in high school and a national champion concrete canoe racer while studying engineering at the University South Carolina. His love for nature and animals was evident in his many hobbies which included gardening, raising animals, and working the land. George also enjoyed crossword puzzles, reading, and traveling. He was the original up-cycler, designing and creating projects that ranged from the functional to the whimsical. He had the gift of gab and brought smiles and joy to his family, friends, and the people he met, striking up conversations with strangers wherever he went.

Above all, what mattered most to George was his family. George is survived by his devoted wife of 48 years, Catherine Beale; children, John Davis, Heather Langdale, George Langdale (Katie), Laura Federico, Cleve Langdale, Charles Langdale (Allie), and Matthew Langdale; his cherished grandchildren, Porter Reyes, Gavin Reyes, Curt Langdale, Ava Langdale, Ethan Langdale, Cody Langdale, Hannah Earhart, Lacie Earhart, Lara Langdale, Anna Federico, Will Federico, Jack Federico, Elizabeth Federico, Rowan Langdale, May Langdale, and Theo Davis; and a sister, Holly Meetze (Joe). He was preceded in death by his father Charles Langdale, his mother Harriett Langdale, and his sister Libby Sutherland.
