Thelma Rebecca Ware Obituary
Today we celebrate the remarkable life and enduring legacy of Thelma Rebecca Ware, whose journey touched so many hearts. On Saturday, May 9, 2026, God called Thelma Ware from labor to reward.
Thelma’s story began in Lugoff, SC, where she graduated from Woods School. Her path led her to marry the late Walter Addison. Thelma lovingly welcomed six children. Later, she relocated to the District of Columbia, embarking on a professional career with the District of Columbia Public Schools and serving at Raymond Elementary in the 1970s. Her dedication continued as she joined the Department of Justice, Immigration and Naturalization Service (INS), where she devoted fifteen years and earned numerous awards for loyalty, diligence, outstanding performance, and exceptional service from the Office of Equal Employment Opportunity (EEO).
In 1992, Thelma found love again, marrying the late Jimmie Ware and embracing five stepchildren. After a distinguished career, Thelma retired from the EEO in 2000.
Thelma’s faith and community spirit shone brightly through her membership at Zion Hill Baptist Church in Washington, DC, and Macedonia Baptist Church in Bethesda, MD. Upon returning to South Carolina in 2001, Thelma joined St. Matthew Baptist Church, serving as a Deaconess and singing joyfully with the Senior Choir. In 2023 Thelma returned to Maryland to reside with her son, daughter-in-law and grandson. Although she could not physically attend worship service, Thelma’s devotion extended to participating in bible study with Zion Baptist Church, connecting with members of Macedonia Baptist Church, and tuning in to St. Matthew Baptist Church’s online services every Sunday.
Known for her love of word search puzzles, scratch tickets, and reading the Bible, Thelma found joy in opening presents and watching her favorite shows like Jeopardy, Wheel of Fortune, Walker Texas Ranger, and The View. Her culinary skills were legendary—especially her cakes, which delighted anyone lucky enough to taste them.
Thelma cherished conversations with her siblings, nieces, and nephews, and treasured time spent with her grandchildren, with a special fondness for her one and only great grandson.
As we remember Thelma, let’s celebrate a life filled with kindness, service, and unforgettable moments. May her warmth and wisdom continue to inspire us all.
With heartfelt appreciation for Thelma’s legacy,
