Joseph Belton Obituary
Mr. Joseph Belton was born on February 5, 1937, in Fairfield County, South Carolina, to the late Randolph and Della Belton. From humble beginnings, Joseph developed the strong work ethic, determination, and love for family that would define his remarkable life.
Joseph graduated from Jackson High School in 1955. Shortly after graduation, he moved to Washington, D.C., where he began a dedicated career with the Washington, D.C. Sanitation Department. Through nearly thirty years of faithful service, hard work, and leadership, he rose to the position of Supervisor with the Department of Public Works before retiring.
After retirement, Joseph returned home to South Carolina, where his industrious spirit continued to shine. He worked an additional fifteen years with the Piggly Wiggly Corporation, remaining active and committed to serving others.
Joseph was united in marriage to the former Mary Louise Walker, who preceded him in death. To this union were born four children: Malcolm Walker, JoAnn Belton, Alfred Belton, and Joseph Belton, Jr.
Joseph enjoyed life to the fullest and was known for his vibrant personality and unmistakable style. He loved NASCAR because he truly had a “need for speed,” and he was a devoted Washington Redskins fan through every season. Joseph took great pride in his automobiles, keeping them spotless, properly serviced, and meticulously documented with his own detailed service records.
He cherished his family deeply and was a familiar face around town, often seen riding with his beloved German Shepherd, Bandit. Known by many as “the man with the Black Cowboy Hat,” Joseph never met a stranger and left lasting impressions wherever he went.
In addition to his parents and wife, Joseph was preceded in death by his sons, Malcolm Walker and Alfred Belton; his grandson, Damien Belton; and his siblings, Millie Belton, Blanche Belton Jones, Randolph Belton, and Albert Rilley.
Joseph leaves to cherish his precious memories his loving wife, Katina; his children, JoAnn, Joseph, Katrina, Janay, and Janea; his siblings, Mary (Robert) James, Della Line Berger, Roosevelt Rilley, Jimmie (Joyce) Rilley, Jacqueline (Thomas) Morten, Alice (Renardo) Belton-Terrell, and Mary Elizabeth Belton-Kelley; ten grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; his bonus son, Leo (Missy) Scott, Jr.; his extended family, Mozelle Bennett and family; Sister in-laws Wendy Gunter and Dana Smith, brother in-law Johnny Darby; along with a host of nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends who will forever treasure his love, wisdom, and unforgettable presence.
Joseph Belton lived a life marked by hard work, loyalty, pride, and love for those around him. His legacy will continue through the many lives he touched, the memories he created, and the family he loved so dearly.
“Those we love never truly leave us. They live on in the hearts and memories of those who loved them.”
