Rev. Ed Stokes Obituary

Rev. Edwin McDonald Stokes, known as "Ed" by most or "Uncle Bud" by family and friends, passed away peacefully on May 1, 2026, at the age of 93. Born on June 30, 1932, in Bishopville, South Carolina, Edwin was a pillar of his community and a beloved figure in his hometown of Camden, where he lived for the majority of his life. He dedicated his life to serving others, both in his career as a minister and in his personal life.


Pastor Ed's dedication to faith was unwavering. He served as a pastor at numerous churches, including Refuge Baptist, Friendship Baptist, which he founded, and Southside Baptist among others. His devotion to his calling was evident in his tireless work and the countless lives he touched. In addition to his ministry, Pastor Ed had a deep love for reading, particularly his Bible, and enjoyed the company of others, always ready to lend an ear or share a smile. He was also fond of word searches, a hobby that brought him great joy and relaxation. He also retired from Dupont.  


Edwin is survived by his wife, Frances "Fran" Stokes; sons, Donnie Stokes (Deborah), Larry Stokes (Joyce); step-children, Jimmy Forrest, Jr. (Karon), Karen Vinson (Steve), Roger Forrest (Kim): 9 grandchildren; and 8 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Peggy Stokes; parents, Bertha and Willie Stokes; siblings, Henry Stokes, Ann Huggins, Rae King, Mary Davis; and 2 great-grandchildren. 


Pastor Ed's life will be celebrated at a funeral service to be held on Monday, May 4, 2026, at 11:00 am at the First Baptist Church, 1201 Broad Street, Camden, South Carolina, with burial to follow in Malvern Hill Baptist Church Cemetery. Visitation will be held prior to the service from 10-11 in the fellowship hall. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to a charity on one's choice.
