It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Shirley Christine Murphy Benson,  on April 15th, 2026, at the age of 85. Born on October 17th, 1940, in Lugoff, South Carolina, she was the daughter of the late Leonard Murphy and Hannah Harris Murphy Roberts. 

Shirley spent most of her life in Lugoff, SC, where she was deeply rooted in her community. She worked diligently as a Machine Operator in the manufacturing sector, where her dedication and hard work were always evident. Shirley was also an active member of the Sutton Branch Baptist Church, where her faith was strengthened and her spirit was nourished. Her favorite pastimes were watching her beloved soap operas and Wheel of Fortune, showcasing her love for engaging and captivating stories. A lover of word puzzles and playing cards, Shirley was always up for a challenge that stimulated her mind.

Shirley's passion for life and exceptional warmth will be deeply missed by her loving children, Rita Harris of Camden, Ty Benson of Columbia, Melissa McNeil (Milton) of Fayetteville, N.C., Lisa Mayo of Lugoff, Leondi Williams of Lugoff, and Johnny Benson of Lugoff;  brother, Bennie Murphy (Leondi) of Columbia; 21 grandchildren; 38 great-grandchildren; and 10 great-great-grandchildren. She is preceded in death by daughter, Renee Jackson sister, Lindsey Harris; and 3 grandchildren. 

Visitation will be held on Monday, April 20th, 2026, from 5-7 p.m. at Powers Funeral Home, located at 832 Ridgeway Road, Lugoff, South Carolina, 29078. The funeral service will take place on Tuesday, April 21st, 2026, at 3:00pm at Sutton Branch Baptist Church, located in Lugoff, South Carolina, 29078 with burial to follow in the church cemetery.
