Sylvia Sessions James Obituary

It is with an overwhelming sense of loss and profound sadness that we announce the passing of Sylvia Sessions James. Born in Camden, South Carolina on January 11, 1937, Sylvia departed from this world on April 2, 2026, leaving behind a legacy of love, compassion, and generosity. A loving wife, mother, friend, and community member, her kind and gentle spirit touched everyone she met, and her memory will forever be etched in our hearts.

In her leisure time, Sylvia's love for the natural world was evident in her passion for bird watching and her deep appreciation for flowers. Her heart was truly mirrored in the beauty she found in nature.

Sylvia was a charter member of Hillcrest Baptist Church, where she faithfully served and attended. Her generous spirit and sweet demeanor were an inspiration to all who knew her.

Sylvia is survived by her loving husband of 68 years, Francis Eugene "Pete" James; daughters, Melody James of Lexington, Merri James of Columbia, and Mandy James Smith (Townsend) of Fort Mill , South Carolina; and grandchildren, David Bradley, Michael Bradley, Townsend Smith, and Elliot Smith. She is also survived by her only living aunt, Jean Branham Dabney, who has always been like a sister to her. She was preceded in death by her father, Edwin L. "Shorty" Sessions, and her mother, Inez Branham Sessions.

A funeral service to celebrate Sylvia's life will be held at Hillcrest Baptist Church, located at 2666 Jefferson Davis Highway, Elgin, South Carolina, 29045, on Tuesday, April 7, 2026, at 5:00 p.m.  Prior to the service in the sanctuary, the family will receive friends from 3:30-5:00 p.m. in the church fellowship hall.

Memorials may be made to Hillcrest Baptist Church or the Parkinson's Foundation.
