Josephine Johnson Samuel, born October 31, 1932, in Lugoff, South Carolina, was a beacon of light and an epitome of love, devotion, and warmth. She passed away peacefully on March 10, 2026, leaving behind a legacy of love, kindness, and a life well-lived.


Josephine lived her life as a devoted homemaker. A woman of many talents, Josephine was not only a skilled cook, having served delicious meals at Pine Grove School, Blaney Elementary and her own home, but also an avid lover of nature, spending her free time gardening, canning, and caring for her beautiful flowers. She was an avid reader and an active member of the United Outreach Ministry in Elgin, SC. Her passion for Bible study was a testament to her unwavering faith and her strength of character. Josephine was a beloved mother, a cherished friend, and a respected member of her community.


She is survived by her children, Thomasina Gibson of Elgin, SC, Thomas James Samuel (Sheila) of Elgin, SC and Daisy Samuel Robinson of Lugoff, SC; sister, Silvia Cantey and Rosina Cousins; grandchildren, Shawn L., Shemica L., Brittany G., Paige G., Rhonda S., Narisa E. (JR), Julia M. (Rodney), Christy Q.; beloved grandson, Trevino Gibson; 19 great grandchildren; special nephews, George and Marvin Shepherd; special nieces, Megan Shephard and Missy Belton special friend, Geraldine Bush; two sisters-in-law;  and a host of cousins and friends. 


She was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas Samuel, Jr.; father, Kato James, and her mother, Carolene Jones; daughter, Bernice Lee; son-in-law, Kenneth Dell Robinson; siblings, Maggie Hendrick, Fannie Moore, Ella Lee Mobley, Alma Shepherd, Carrie Lee Jones, Robert Lee Jones, Sonny Jones, Daniel Jones, Donald Jones, Robert Jones, Johnny Jones and LeRoy Jones. 


A funeral service will be held on Monday, March 16, 2026, at 12:00 pm at Powers Funeral Home in Lugoff, SC with burial to follow in United Outreach Ministry in Elgin, SC. Mrs. Samuel will be available for viewing one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. Rev. Jeffrey Williams will be officiating. 


The family extends the deepest gratitude to Amedisys Health and Grace and Mercy Care for the loving care given to Mrs. Josephine Samuel.  They also extend thanks to the Qualls family for their support and care.
