Mary Helen Flowers Obituary

With heartfelt reverence, we celebrate the love-filled life of Mary Helen Flowers, who was born on January 30, 1939, in Rockingham, North Carolina, and peacefully departed on January 24, 2026 at Pinedale Residential Center in Camden, S.C. In Helen's own words, "I was not born to be ordinary. I was born to teach, to love, and to make a difference." And indeed, she lived up to these words, leaving behind a legacy of love, mentorship, and service.

Having been an esteemed educator, Helen spent over 40 years shaping young minds in Mecklenburg County School District before moving to Camden, South Carolina where she continued to educate part-time in the Kershaw County School District. She was a proud graduate of East Carolina University and Appalachian State University, holding a bachelor's and master's degree respectively.

Helen, known for her enchanting voice, found joy in singing and ministering at local nursing homes. She was a devoted member of the First Baptist Church in Camden, where her voice resonated in the choir and in her special solo performances. Outside the church, her love for nature was evident in her beautiful garden where she cultivated a variety of flowers.

Helen is survived by her brother, John Flowers (Joyce) of Camden, S.C.; sister, Geraldine Beer (Col. Jan D. Beer, US Army Ret'd); nieces and nephews, Tara Hutchens (Chuck), Joy Lyn Tarpley (Jeff), Starr Beer, Kevin Flowers, (Regan), and Angela Bradley (David); great-nieces and nephews, Casey Hutchins, Alina Hutchens, Conor Hutchens (Manuela), John Tarpley, Mary Joy Tarpley, Molly Beth Tarpley, Maddison Flowers, Jordan Flowers, Ellen Horton, Savannah Bradley, and Hannah Bradley; and great-great-niece, Braven Gibson.  She was preceded in death by her parents, JohnWesley Flowers and Dorothy Beatrice Dawkins Flowers.

Her life will be celebrated on Thursday, February 5, 2026, at 11:00 am at the Powers Funeral Home, located at 832 Ridgeway Road, Lugoff, South Carolina, 29078.  The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.  Burial will be held on Thursday at 3:00 p.m. in Richmond County Memorial Park, Rockingham, N.C.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Love A Child, Inc., 12411 Commerce Lakes Drive, Fort Myers, FL  33913 or the American Cancer Society.
