Gary Horton Elliott Obituary

It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Gary Horton Elliott on December 7, 2025. Born January 9, 1946, in Charleston, SC, Gary was the son of Elmore W. Elliott and Ruby Horton Elliott.

Gary had a long and extensive history with firefighting during which he was involved in the Amtrak derailment, Red Fox Road Fire and many other large scale natural disasters. Gary's life was characterized by a dedication to service, a trait that found its most profound expression in his role as Fire Marshal of Kershaw County. In this role, he was a tireless advocate for fire fighters safety, constantly striving to modernize the fire service and rebuild fire trucks to meet the needs of the time. Part of that advocation was the introduction of the Fire Investigator Program to Kershaw County Fire Service and serving as the commissioner on the SC State Fire Commission. His work was not confined to the Kershaw County Fire Service and the Camden Fire Department; he also served on the Kershaw County Council and the State Fire Marshal Board. Gary was a founding member of the Cleveland School Memorial Foundation and served on their board as well. He was the emergency preparedness director of Kershaw County.

Gary's dedication to the community was mirrored in his personal life. He was a proud member of Hermitage Baptist Church in Camden, SC, and he owned and operated the Olde Camden Catery. Gary's love for his community was only surpassed by his love for cooking. He was a master at BBQ and oyster roasts, designing and building his own cookers. Those who were lucky enough to experience his cooking skills will remember the wonderful food and camaraderie he brought to every gathering.

Gary is survived by his loving wife, Heidi Miller Elliott; sisters, Linda Elliott Hancock (Robert) of Camden, SC and Suzanne Elliott Beck (Larry) of Camden, SC; and his beloved dogs, Shrimp's and Grit.

Gary is preceded in death by his parents, Elmore and Ruby Elliott; son, Rhett Horton Elliott; and brothers, Carly Elliott and Kenny Elliott.

A memorial service celebrating Gary's life will be held on Sunday, December 14, 2025, at 3:00 p.m. at Powers Funeral Home. The family will receive friends following the service at the funeral home.

The family would like to thank Dr. C. Kearse, Dr. Stephen VanHorn and Dr. William  Brabham for their care and compassion during this difficult time.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Fostering Foster or Thiel-Meyer Pet Adoption Center.
