Rebecca Phyllis Oliver (Newman) Obituary

It is with selfish hearts we share that Rebecca Phyllis Oliver (Newman), 83, passed away peacefully on Monday, December 1, 2025.

Becky was born at home in Hawesville, KY on February 27, 1942 to the late Homer Otto Newman and Eugenia Loretta Newman(Dunn). She graduated from Hawesville High School in 1960. She met the love of her life, Otis Guy Oliver, Jr, at a bus stop, thanks to late buses for both of them. It was pretty much love at first sight. She was an active member of the Baptist church in Hawesville, and he was a student pastor at the little Presbyterian church across the road. They married that summer after her graduation and she proudly became a minister’s wife.

She was a devoted minister’s wife and mother, serving the Lord with gladness. She never had idle hands, cooking for her family and church family, a skilled seamstress, avid crafter, and devourer of books, especially her Bible. She was blessed with a beautiful voice and loved singing in the choir and with her husband. She was the epitome of the Proverbs 31 woman. She was actively involved in her children’s school days and after a time decided it was time for her to return to school. She received her BSRN from Hinds Junior College in Raymond, MS. She worked as an RN with newborn babies until her grandchildren arrived and she stepped away from her career to be a devoted grandmother.

Becky is survived by her son, Guy and his wife Sara, of North Augusta, SC and their children Andrew and Alex Oliver, Daniel and Brittney Oliver and Rebecca Oliver. She is also survived by her daughter Bethany and her husband Mark Montoya of Lugoff, SC and their children Kristin Montoya, Adam Montoya, and Holly Montoya. In addition she is survived by seven great-grandchildren; Lilly, Amber, Payton, John, Abigail, Austin and Paisley. Her brother Homer Lowell Newman of Hawesville, KY also survives her along with several nieces, nephews, and great nieces and nephews and one great great nephew.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 63 years, the Rev. Dr. Otis Guy Oliver, Jr. and her great-grandson Lucas Benjamin Oliver, both in 2024.

A service in remembrance of her life and celebrating her home going will be held at 10:00 am on Friday, December 5, 2025 at Bethune Presbyterian Church. The family will be recieving friends the evening prior, Thursday, December 4, 2025 from 5:00 to 7:00 pm at Powers Funeral Home. Rev Rodney Foster and Rev Christina Trimble will officiate.
