Floyd Gilmore Harris, 84, passed away on Friday, November 21, 2025. Born in Elgin, SC, on January 12, 1941, he was the son of the late Gilmore Harris and Elizabeth Portee Harris. He was predeceased by his loving and faithful wife Elisabeth Z. Harris.
Mr. Harris honorably served in the United States Army during the Vietnam era in the Military Police Corp, earning a Bronze Star for his service during that conflict. Following his military career, he served the Meriden, CT community as a dedicated member of the Police Department. Well known for his sharp wit, ever-present cigar, and warm heart, he was beloved by many as a wise-cracking, caring police officer who left a lasting impact on those he served.
Floyd was also passionate about softball and became a local legend in Meriden, affectionately known as “Hammering Hank Floyd Harris.” He was celebrated for his ability to hit the ball a mile - always choosing to walk the bases afterward, with no intention of running them.
In retirement, Floyd was a faithful member of Fort Clarke Baptist Church in Elgin, SC, where he served as a Deacon for more than 20 years. Deeply committed to helping others, he worked tirelessly at the church’s food pantry, ensuring no one in the community went hungry. He also enjoyed tending to his yard, shelling pecans, and spending quiet time listening to his music.
Left to cherish his memory are his children, Johann G. Harris, Sr. (Sandi), Franizka Harris, Leroy H. Harris (Katy), and Floyd G. Harris; his sisters, Eddie Mae Phipps (Albert) and Anne Tate; along with numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and extended family.
In addition to his beloved wife and parents, he was predeceased by his brothers Leroy P. Harris, George Harris, Herman Harris, Richard Harris, and Truman Harris; and his sisters Sandra Easterling, Myrtle Anderson, and Johnnie Mae Wint.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, November 29, 2025, at 10:00 a.m. at Powers Funeral Home in Lugoff, SC, with inurnment to follow at Fort Clarke Baptist Church in Elgin, SC.
