James Phillip Barrett, known by all as Phil, passed away on Tuesday, October 28, 2025. Born in Laurens on August 20, 1947, he was a son of the late James M. and Frances Knight Barrett. Phil graduated from Anderson College and retired as a general manager from Belk Store Services after 40 years. He served in the U.S. Army and was a Vietnam Veteran.
Phil was a member of Bethel Worship Center, where he volunteered as a greeter. He was an avid reader, and enjoyed boating, fishing, golfing, doing yardwork and riding his motorcycle.
Left to cherish his memory are his wife of 37 years, Lisa Cooper Barrett; brother, Keith Barrett (Sonya) of Laurens; brother-in-law, Jeff Cooper (Lori) of Camden; father-in-law, Jackie Cooper; mother-in-law, Joyce Dinkins; nephews, Jordan Cooper (Abbi), Graham Cooper (Drew), Tanner Cooper (Christine); nieces, Dawn Sherfield (Reid), Amanda Barrett, Elizabeth Barrett, Blair Alexander; great-nephew, James Cooper; great-niece, Kaylee Cooper; and his beloved mini-schnauzer, Sam.
A celebration of life service will be held Friday at 2:00 p.m. at Bethel Worship Center with burial to follow in Quaker Cemetery. Pastor Joe Stines and Pastor Javin Proctor will officiate. The family will receive friends Thursday from 4-6 p.m. at Powers Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Tunnels to Towers Foundation or to Bethel Worship Center.
