Steven Hewitt, aged 73, passed away Wednesday, October 1st, 2025. Born in Newberry, South Carolina, Steven was a gifted artist, avid tennis player, a consummate devil's advocate, loving husband and father as well as a man of unwavering devotion to his basset hounds (Sis and Sas, deceased). Perhaps he saw in their sad faces the empathy that our modern world has lost. He was a man that brought good humor and a patient spirit to this world.
As a military brat and former veteran, Steven traveled across the US and Europe. As a potter and glass artist, his work was exhibited across the country and in Europe. After serving in the military, he attended the Univ. of South Carolina receiving a BFA and MA. He then was employed by the City of Columbia where he was best known for developing the arts programs that became the popular Arts Center. Steven shared his passion for art with his students; his wife, Mana; and his daughter, Vanessa.
He was predeceased by his parents, Norma Claire White Hewitt and Otis Fulton Hewitt.
He leaves behind his wife of 52 years, Mana Debalae Cochran Hewitt; daughter, Vanessa Hewitt Devore (Tom); and his brother, Otis Fulton Hewitt Jr. (Pat).
In lieu of flowers, please make donations to Columbia Tennis Center.... or go out and play a game of tennis in his memory.
