James Richard Kinlaw Obituary

James Richard Kinlaw, Sr., born on April 21, 1945, in Lynchburg, South Carolina, passed away on September 10, 2025. He proudly served in the United States Army, and he was a Vietnam War veteran. James made his home in Kershaw, South Carolina, where he spent many years as a dedicated Material Handler in the printing industry before his retirement. Known for his love of music, James was a past member of the Heavenly Tones Gospel Group, where he shared his passion for singing. His voice brought comfort and joy to many and was a testament to his unwavering faith.

James had a deep love for the outdoors and could often be found working in his beloved garden. His green thumb was admired by many and his garden was a living testament to his patience and nurturing nature. Beyond his love for music and gardening, James also enjoyed participating in his local CB Club. As the famous quote by Helen Keller goes, “Life is either a daring adventure or nothing at all,” James indeed lived a life full of adventure and shared his experiences and knowledge with those around him. He was an active member of the Emmanuel Baptist Church where he served faithfully.

James will be deeply missed by his wife Peggy Kinlaw; children, Richie Kinlaw (Kim), Benny Baker (Amber), Dana Kinlaw, and Jennifer McCaskill (Chris); siblings, John Kinlaw (Louise) of Bishopville, Roy Kinlaw (Benita) of Goose Creek, Ed Kinlaw (April) of Sumter, Dianne Rogers (Jimmy)  of Lynchburg, Portia Welch of Lynchburg, and Janice Kinlaw of Lynchburg; aunt, Jenny Locklair of Summerton; and son-in-law, Gary Jackson of Kershaw. He was preceded in death by his parents Carl and Alice Kinlaw; brother, William Kinlaw and sister, Miriam Tilson; and 11 grandchildren; 1 great grandchild; and 3 step-grandchildren.

A Memorial will be held on Saturday, September 13, 2025, at 11:00 am at Emmanuel Baptist Church in Camden. The family will receive friends in the church fellowship hall after the service.
