Lonnie Patterson, age 78, of Elgin, South Carolina, passed away peacefully on August 15, 2025. Born on May 4, 1947, in Harlem, New York, Lonnie spent his early years growing up between Brooklyn, NY and Eastover, SC. He was educated in the New York City public school system and went on to live a life of service, dedication, and creativity.
Lonnie proudly served in the United States Air Force from 1965 to 1972, achieving the rank of Sergeant. That same year, he married his beloved Deborah Obey, a union that would span decades and, after life’s journeys, be joyfully renewed in remarriage in 1994.
After his military service, Lonnie began a long and steady career with the U.S. Postal Service in 1986. Even after retiring from the Post Office, Lonnie remained active in his community, working as a city bus driver for the City of Columbia, SC, and later as a school bus driver for Kershaw County.
Beyond his work, Lonnie was known for his vibrant personality and many passions. He had a deep love for music and was known for his rich singing voice—a talent he shared freely and joyfully. He was an avid bowler and an enthusiastic pinochle player, actively participating in leagues for both. A true creative at heart, he had a love for photography that blossomed into his own business—capturing moments for others and leaving behind a beautiful visual legacy.
Lonnie is survived by his daughter, Afrika Mathis (Kevin) of Galloway, N.J.; son, Gordon Patterson (Denne) of Berlin, N.J.; sisters, Annette Dickerson and Linda Johnson; 7 grandchildren; and 1 great-grandchild. He was preceded in death by his parents, Leonard Damon and Lucille McCoy; and brothers, James Dickerson, Everett McCoy and Curtis Dickerson. His memory will live on in the lives he touched and the images he captured.
Lonnie loved the Lord and was a faithful member of True Vine Outreach Ministries in Eastover,SC.
A life well lived, Lonnie will be deeply missed by family, friends, and all who had the pleasure of knowing him.
