LUGOFF- A funeral service for Carolyn Marline Thornton, 84, will be held Tuesday at 11:00 a.m. at Powers Funeral Home with burial to follow in Quaker Cemetery. The Rev. Clint Ellis will officiate. The family will receive friends prior to the service from 10 – 11 am at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to First Baptist Church, Camden.
Mrs. Thornton, wife of the late James “Jim” Thorton, passed away on Wednesday, June 25, 2025. Born in Lancaster, she was a daughter of the late Wade Hampton Deese, Sr. and Molevia Mungo Deese. Mrs. Thorton attended York Technical College and USC of Lancaster and received a Bachelor’s in nursing. She was a registered nurse with KershawHealth for over 16 years. She was a member of First Baptist Church, Camden, where she participated in Sunday school, and the Oncology Nursing Society. The highlight of her nursing career was receiving the South Carolina Nurses Association’s “Excellence in Nursing Practice” award in Nov. of 1992. Mrs. Thornton enjoyed spending time with family and friends, sharing stories, entertaining at Christmas and especially, New Year’s Eve, and cooking special foods for family.
Surviving are her son, Charles “Chuck” Belcher (Donna) of Lugoff; step-children, Chalsey Dorsey and Kathy Perkins; brother, Rev. Ray Deese (Brenda); grandchildren, Autumn Coleman, Haley Johnson (Curtis); great-grandchildren, Bayley, Braysen, Shaina, Triston; great-great grandchild, Isabella; and nephews, Jason Stresing and Sam Stresing.
