Jimmy Dean Sanders Obituary
Eastover - Jimmy Dean Sanders, a proud Vietnam veteran and beloved son, brother, father, uncle, and friend, passed away on Saturday, May 24, 2025. He was born in Kentucky to the late Willard E. Sanders and Audrey Dyer Sanders, both of Vicco, Kentucky.
Jimmy served in the U.S. Army’s 1st Infantry Division, known as the Big Red One—one of the most storied and respected units in American military history. The division endured relentless front-line combat and high casualty rates during the Vietnam War and stood as a symbol of unmatched resilience. Jimmy received multiple military honors during his service, including the Bronze Star Medal with 1st Oak Leaf Cluster—awarded twice for heroic or meritorious achievement under combat conditions. His commendations also included, but were not limited to, the Expert Marksmanship Badge, the Combat Infantryman Badge, and the Valorous Unit Award, presented to entire units for extraordinary heroism in action.
After his military service, Jimmy worked for many years as a coal miner in Kentucky with the Blue Diamond Coal Company and later became a skilled machinist. He enjoyed woodworking and bass fishing, and Dale Hollow Lake remained one of his most cherished places.
He was preceded in death by his siblings Mike Sanders of Tennessee; Phyllis Combs of Thayer, Indiana; and Vera Segura of Florence, South Carolina.
Jimmy is survived by his daughter, Kelli Sanders, of San Diego, California, as well as a host of nieces and nephews. An old friend once shared that Jimmy said Kelli was the best thing that ever happened to him. He was quietly generous to those he loved, especially friends, family, and organizations close to his heart.
He will be remembered with deep respect for his service, his bravery, and the perseverance that carried him through life.
