Lillie Doris Elkins Barton Obituary

Lillie Doris Elkins Barton, 94, passed away on Monday, September 23, 2024, peacefully at home surrounded by her family. Born in Richland County, SC, on November 16, 1929, she was the daughter of the late Whightman and Ollie Beatrice Higgins Martin. She was employed with Richland School District II for 35 years, working in the school cafeteria before retiring in 1989. She was a member of Spears Creek Baptist Church in Elgin, SC, where she taught Sunday School and also sang in the church choir, and volunteered for the nursery. She was a member of the Women’s Missionary Union and the Rejoicers. Mrs. Barton enjoyed crocheting, listening to Gospel Music and traveling to the mountains. But above all else she enjoyed being with her family.


Left to cherish her memories is her daughter, Rachel Elkins Jolly; brother, Floyd Martin; granddaughter, Amy Lynn Jolly; grandson, Franklin “Paul” Jolly (Ashley); sisters-in-law, Joyce Martin and Sandra Martin; great-grand dog, Copper; and numerous nieces, nephews, and extended family.


She was predeceased by her husband of 41 years, George M. Elkins; brothers, Whightman Martin, Jr., Ted George Martin and William “Bill” Martin and sisters, Beulah Brazell, Edna M. Martin, and Louise Martin Brown.


A funeral service honoring the life of Mrs. Barton will be held Sunday, September 29, 2024 at 3:00 pm at Spears Creek Baptist Church in Elgin, SC. The family will receive friends at Powers Funeral Home on Friday, September 27,2024 from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm. The Rev. Joshua Blythe, Rev. Greg Sweet and Rev. Bryan Hunt will be officiating. The family would like to extend a special thanks to Heart of Hospice and the staff of Dr. Hartvigsen for all their help and support during this difficult time.
